In three days, we made it all the way around the Gulf of Naples from Naples to Pompeii to Sorrento. As we moved south from Rome, the pace slowed further and further. Finishing the trip in serene Sorrento drew the perfect period to a week and a half in Italy.
Visiting the iconic Rome sights from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain, but it was the Borghese Gallery that’s a true must-see, even if you are not an art museum person. I would go back over and over again just to say hello to the beautiful Pauline Bonaparte.
We learned a little bit of sad history in the Jewish Ghetto then escaped the chaos of Rome for a little peace and quiet in Ostia Antica. But the best part of the day was reuniting with my dear friend Federica. The more you travel, the more friends you will have around the world, then nowhere is truly strange anymore.
With a lot of research, the will to see every single gallery, and fueled by caffeine and sheer joy, I followed my own perfectly crafted itinerary through the entire Vatican Museums. I’m so glad I didn’t follow the cattle tours and was able to take my time to soak in all the art to my heart’s delight. Rome in Autumn and an overload of classic sculptures make my heart sing. The National Museum of Rome should be on any sculpture lover’s must see list. And I think the phrase “When in Rome…” was created to forgive all the cliche things we do when in Rome.
From ancient ruins to Renaissance villa, I had so much to see on Day 2 in Rome! In this photo though, I was disapproving the cruelty of the original Hunger Games and the gender inequality in the Colosseum seating.
