Chronologically, I should be working on my next Italy post, but I just realized that I have never written about my many trips back to the East! I guess it always felt more like going home rather than a planned trip. That needs to change!
China is a massive country with diverse cultures, cuisines, and geography. There is so much more to see besides the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. The northeastern part of China is where my family is originally from. I might be a little biased, but I think it’s one of the most underrated places in China. While it is bitterly cold (but also incredibly beautiful) in the winter, the northeast is a favored place to escape the heat of the summer.
Changbai Mountain
The Changbai Mountain (meaning the “forever white mountain”) marks the border between China and North Korea. A crystal clear lake named “Heavenly Lake” sits at the top. It might not be a popular destination for foreigners, it definitely is for locals. Check out the “great wall of people” walking along the ridge.
Changbai Valley Forest
In the valley at the base of the mountain is one of the prettiest forests. Here you can clean your lungs with the freshest air and comfort your eyes with the greenest green.
Don’t overlook the beauty of the northeast on your next trip to China!
